Foundation Level provides essential credit skills for frontline staff and early-career professionals. Participants build core competence in credit principles, personal and business lending, proposal assessment, and regulatory frameworks.

The Foundation Level aims to provide participants with a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of credit and lending. It equips professionals with the knowledge to assess credit proposals, manage risk, and make sound lending decisions in personal, business, and property lending environments.

 

Learning Approach

The six month course is delivered via a self-paced online eLearning platform, providing participants with interactive and engaging content, video presentations, and a personalised study plan. Participants also benefit from live seminars led by senior-level subject matter experts, incorporating scenario-based learning to bridge theory and practice.

Entry Requirements

Early career, or those seeking to transition into credit professional roles. The Foundation Level assumes no prior technical knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of personal and business lending frameworks.

  • Conduct credit assessments using structured approaches and financial analysis tools.

  • Identify potential risks and problems in lending and propose appropriate solutions.

  • Apply knowledge of securities and guarantees to mitigate lending risk.

  • Interpret case studies and industry examples to support practical decision-making.

  • Develop a professional approach to credit evaluation, contributing to organizational risk management.

Assessment

Course Work: 2000-word case-based assignment

Examination: 2 hour online multiple-choice online examination.

The course weighting is 50/50 with a combined pass mark 60.

Successful candidates will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and 35 hours of Continuous Professional Development.

Advanced Level

The Advanced Level is designed for experienced credit professionals seeking to enhance analytical and decision-making capabilities. Participants explore complex credit risk assessment, large company analysis, project finance, early warning indicators, and corporate recovery strategies.

The Advanced Level equips professionals with the skills to analyse financial statements, assess business risk, and identify potential issues in more complex lending scenarios. Participants learn to quantify risks in corporate lending, high-net-worth client portfolios, and specialised lending lines, applying advanced techniques to support effective credit decision-making.

Entry Requirements
The Credit Skills Academy recommends that candidates applying for the Advanced Level have first completed the Foundation Level.

Exemptions may be granted to individuals whose professional experience and educational background demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge. This may include senior credit professionals, risk managers, bankers, or decision-makers with substantial experience in credit analysis, lending, or risk oversight.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Analyse financial statements and key performance indicators to identify credit risks in complex business and high-net-worth lending.

  • Apply structured approaches to assess business and asset risk using advanced tools and rating models.

  • Evaluate large company credit exposures and syndicated facilities effectively.

  • Detect early warning signals in cash flow and financial performance to mitigate risk.

  • Integrate technical lending knowledge with ethical and regulatory considerations in decision-making.

  • Demonstrate professional judgment in managing advanced lending scenarios, supporting organisational risk management strategies.

The Chartered Banker MBA, exclusively available at Bangor University, recognises prior learning where the learning outcomes of a module have been fully met through study completed with a recognised institution.

Completion of the Credit Skills Academy Advanced Level provides an exemption from the Credit & Lending module within the Chartered Banker MBA, subject to meeting the programme entry requirements. Enquire for further information.
